Why Keep your Microwave Oven Clean?
I know that sounds like a stupid question but microwaves just don’t seem to get the same amount of attention as other kitchen appliances.
I’ve worked in offices where the communal staff microwave could only be described as a health hazard!
If you want to check out if a microwave is clean look at the ceiling – it’s normally the hardest to clean and, being out of sight, the most neglected
- Keeping your oven clean: –is the best way to prevent the seal around the door from cracking – or to notice if it has
- prevents spills from getting solidified and impossible to remove
- prevent and remove smells.
How to Clean A Microwave Oven Inside?
By far the best way to clean a microwave is to use steam.
But steam alone won’t cut through grease so you need to add in something that will.
My preference is for lemon juice but soap is a good alternative.
I have heard other people swear by vinegar but I don’t find it as effective.
Squeeze half a lemon into an open bowl containing about a pint of hot water. Place it in the microwave and zap it for about 3 minutes.
Remove the bowl and wipe down the surfaces with a clean cloth. The lemon and steam will have worked their magic and the dirt and grease should come away easily.
What’s more your oven and kitchen will smell fresh and lemony.
If there has been a build-up of dirt then you will need to repeat this – perhaps alternating between lemon and soap.
Put about 1 pint of hot water into an open bowl and add some washing-up liquid – just a small squirt – not too much! Stir.
Place the dish in the microwave on high power for about 90 seconds. Remove the bowl and wipe the inside of the oven clean.
You will need to give the oven a quick rinse with a damp sponge to remove any soap. You will need to repeat this if the food is really cooked onto the walls.
If you want to try with vinegar then follow the instructions as for lemon but substitute two tablespoons of vinegar for the lemon juice.
Cleaning the Glass plate and the Outside
This is the easy bit. The glass plate can just go in the usual washing up and the outside can be wiped down with a cloth with a little soap.
Take particular care to clean the door seal and check for wear.
